What is the LT program's purpose?
Our goals for LT reflect our biblical core values. LT is designed to help people pursue and continue to grow in the following:
1. Development of a biblical worldview
2. Cultivating a deep relationship with God
3. Understanding of God's Word
4. Development of Spiritual Disciplines such as prayer, fasting, reading the Bible, time with God, and transparency with your life
5. Understanding of the Gospel and how to relate that to the world
6. Understanding how to take your relationship with Christ to the next level and understanding how He created you to lead, serve, etc…
7. Commitment to a local church community
8. Identity in Christ -
How do you train students to be leaders?
In the same way that diamonds are formed as a result of time and pressure, so also the Virginia Beach LT program creates a challenging environment spanning ten weeks. A combination of full-time employment, evening workshops, group ministry activities, and family-style living quarters provide just the right challenge and setting for life transformation. Opportunities are also available for students to take on a wide range of responsibilities from program administration to small group leadership
-
Who runs the program?
The program is run by a team of pastors and staff members from various GCM campus churches around the country. The development of program contents and teachings is guided by the program directors, a group of GCM pastors and the GCM headquarters.
-
Who participates in LT?
At Virginia Beach LT we expect students primarily from the campuses of the Ball State, Virginia Tech & Bowling Green.
-
When is the LT program?
Virginia Beach LT 2010 runs from May 22-July 31.
-
Where is the LT program located?
The participants live in a beautiful cottage community called Mai Kai Condos near 57th Ave., right in Virginia Beach. It is one block from the beach and a safe, clean living environment for all of the students and staff.
-
How does housing and food work for participants?
The participants will be living in cottages that are part of the tourist recreational community. The people living in each apartment will be responsible for purchasing their own food - with money provided from their LT fees. They will also be preparing the food themselves.
-
What about participants with special housing and food needs?
Those with physical limitations can be accommodated on ground floor units, while those with special dietary needs are able to work that out with their apartment-mates in the selection of items purchased and prepared.
-
How do I apply for LT?
Click on "Ready To Register" link at the top or bottom of the page, or just click here and follow the instructions for applying.
-
What are the registration deadlines and application fees?
There are three registration deadlines with corresponding application fees: the early-bird registration and app fee is $25 if you apply by February 15; the standard registration and app fee is $50 by March 15; and the late registration and app fee is $75 by April 15.
-
How much does the LT program cost?
The Virginia Beach LT ’10 fees are $1999. This amount includes all your housing, food, and program supplies.
-
Is it mandatory that participants work full-time? Why?
As part of the program, each participant is required to work a job or attend school between 32-45 hours a week. The reason for this is to provide an environment for meeting and building natural relationships - important for developing the skills you'll be learning this summer. Obviously, most participants will need to earn an income to help pay for LT, school, and personal expenses. If you don't need to earn an income over the LT period, feel free to volunteer your hours. Because the program activities occur in the evenings and weekends, you'll need to ensure that your job won't conflict with these times.
-
Does GCM guarantee employment for all participants?
GCM cannot guarantee anyone a job for the summer. As maturing adults, we feel this is an appropriate responsibility to leave in your hands. However, to assist you with this process, we have developed a list of potential employers in the area that you might find helpful. While we offer no guarantees, these employers are very interested in employing LT participants. (click here for Jobs List). Be sure to mention you are with the LT program. This is completely your responsibility.
-
How do participants find employment?
As with any out-of-state job search, there are several tools available. Your school's placement center may be of help. Online job sites, local phone books, online newspaper's wanted ads, etc. are other resources that may be helpful. The bottom line is to be aggressive and not wait for something to happen.
-
How are students able to save their summer employment money?
Every LT participant is encouraged to manage their money wisely throughout the summer. There are various factors in how much money you will save such as what type of employment you will obtain.
Another excellent way to help maximize your savings is to recruit a team of financial supporters. Enclosed in your acceptance packet you will find information on how to develop these sponsors to help fund your LT program fees and travel expenses. It is easier than you think and includes various ways in which you can include others to financially and prayerfully support your summer at Leadership Training. Those who develop sponsors through fundraising to cover their program fees could save around $1,500-2,500!
-
If I need to briefly return home, how does that work?
Any student can leave at any time during the summer. We recognize that many families have weddings, reunions and other events that happen in the summer. Our only caveat to this is that too many trips away will cause the participant to miss out on key experiences that not only shape the community we are creating but also can be key building blocks for the summer. We encourage students to know as far ahead of time so that they can let their employer know about needs for time off. We also ask that you communicate your planned departure & return information to a ministry leader at LT before leaving.
-
Can participants leave the LT program if they have a personal emergency? How does that work?
Absolutely! As with a previously planned event requiring your temporary departure from LT, we would ask that you communicate your planned departure & return information to a ministry leader at LT before leaving.
